Fox: (Once they're inside, lifts her up onto his shoulders, making her giggle more, and carries her out through the village, comically shushing villagers who acknowledge them)
Summer: (trying not to laugh and joining in the shushing)
- They burst out in giggles together as they leave the castle grounds
- They continue towards the surrounding forest
Summer: (a little concerned) Mr Fox, daddy says I'm not allowed in there
Fox: (looking up at her the best he can, continuing the dramatics) aw, and here I heard you were always exploring places you shouldn't.
Summer: well, I am, but even I have limits.
Fox: (laughs) do you know why your daddy doesn't like you going in these woods? (stops by aging fence at edge of woods)
Summer: he says it's got lots of portals and it's not safe. He says I could trip and hurt myself or get lost.
Fox: very true, indeed. But it'd be kind of hard for you to trip up when I'm carrying you, wouldn't it?
Summer: (mulls it over briefly) hm. very true, indeed.
Fox: (grins proudly at her imitating him and laughs to himself) besides, I've had a lot of adventures in these woods. When you're with me you won't get lost or hurt, ok?
Summer: (offering her hand for him to shake) you promise?
Fox: (smiling, amused by her, plays along and shakes her hand) I give my word of honour and pledge to protect you, Miss Summertime.
Summer: (feeling important, smiles) (something dawns on her) oh, wait, lemme down!
Fox: (puzzled, sets her down)
Summer: (runs over to the roots of a large tree and kneels down, digging with her hands) daddy wouldn't let me keep these in my room, but I couldn't leave them in your trophy room. They're too precious. He doesn't even lock the door!
Fox: (saunters over and looks down on her, cocking his head in curiosity)
Summer: (smiling to herself as she unearths two dirty cloth-wrapped objects) (she unwraps the top one and offers it up to her hero with a smile)
Fox: (agape) my blade… (Lifts the old and dullened multi-pronged Damascus blade and examines it fondly. Turns in over in his right hand with a grin, pleased to see it again, testing both it and his wrist after the period of disuse)
Summer: (grinning) you used to wield two, didn't you? Ouranos and Cronus.
Fox: (stops spinning the blade to stare wide eyed and surprised down at the child) Yes. You're even cleverer than I thought, little genius. I'd be lucky to even pronounce Ouranos at your age. (Continues spinning blade to himself)
Summer: well I found a book of lore in your treasure room with the names in it.
Fox: (stops to look surprised again. Laughs nervously) eh heh, that story's a little graphic for someone your age, Summer. Please tell me it didn't have pictures (goes to spin blade again but pauses) And that you didn't ask your parents what some of the words meant.
Summer: (grins knowingly) I gathered it was too old for me and guessed better than to ask them, Mr Fox.
Fox: Oh good (looks relieved and goes to play with blade again)
Summer: I asked Cecielia instead.
Fox: (stops. Sighs. Expression seems to say "of course you asked Cecielia." Gives up on playing with blade and turns to Summer again, leaning on the tree) and what did she have to say?
Summer: She asked me what kind of horrid book was I reading, but went away as I was trying to tell her. Why do people ask things when they don't want to hear the answers?
Fox: (grins at her) I don't know, Kid.
Summer: so which one is that? Ouranos, or Cronus?
Fox: (proudly and fondly, lifting blade to look at it again:) This is Ouranos. I lost Cronus a long long time ago.
Summer: (looks excited/anxious, still has other wrapped object in her lap) … when I realised there was only one in the trophy room, but the stories always said you had two, I asked dad about the other one. He said you lost it, too. He said I shouldn't be playing with blades anyway and put it out of my reach. But I got someone to get it down for me when he wasn't there, and then I had this made for you. (unwraps package while Fox looks on curiously) (She reveals a shiny new steel blade, made to be the left-handed twin of Fox's Damascus one. She smiles sweetly and offers it up to him)
Fox: (speechless and gaping, looks exceedingly touched, to the point where he might cry.) (Reaches a slightly shaky left hand down slowly and grasps the handle, lifting it to examine it and smiling disbelievingly)
Summer: (grinning proudly) it's called the Atlas.
Fox: (looks down on her, still gaping and smiling, welling up)
Summer: like one of the other men in the book, the one who holds up the whole world. (Motions lifting the world with her hands and arms) careful though, it's a lot sharper than Ouranos
Fox: (clears throat to settle voice) it looks it. (Spins both blades a few times, smiling, then attaches them securely them to his belt/sash/whatever) (Sighs and smiles to compose himself) thank you, Summer, this is… (Clears throat and shakes head, running hand through hair and grinning at his own reaction) thank you. Now, Miss Summertime, shall we away into the woods? (Bows a little and offers arm, as if to a lady)
Summer: (smiles and discards wrappings in hole, dusting hands off on her sarong) we shall, Mr Fox (taking his arm)
- They climb the fence, Fox helping her over (it's only about waist height)
- They walk carefully through the woods a little way, Fox helping her and looking around him, seemingly deciding on a good place to visit
- Double takes at one mound of Earth and stops, shrugging
Fox: Well, this is as good a place as any, I suppose. (Walks Summer over to mound and brushes away leaves and twigs, revealing a dark, thick, hole cover, looking quite sinister. Struggles to free it, and when he does reveals two short metal ladders inside, joined to the rim of the hole. The rest is impenetrable purple fog, no visible bottom)
