Gate - part 6He turned away from her, and not feeling very tired, she found herself watching him fall asleep. His bedding was still hovering about his hips, and she casually explored the musculature on his back and shoulders in the pale light.
He was about the most interesting person she'd ever met on her travels so far, and one of the few for whom she'd manufactured a body to speak with. She hadn't spent this long anywhere, or with anyone. She usually passed through ineffably, skimming over worlds and peering into lives, but had been either too shy or too scared of the Council to stop to talk to many beings. She found herself quite excited to have a new friend out here in the big wide universe, someone secret, someone just hers, and a fellow Creator besides; she could share anything with him without fear of consequences.
She couldn't stop a little smile from spreading across her face, and she allowed her eyes to close. She let the endless possibilities of their future adventures run through her mi
Gate - part 5They stared at each other for a long time, neither knowing what to say next. Liz's mouth was getting dry as it hung open at the boy, and the silence was becoming deafening.
Gradually, her brain began to function again- neurons firing, possibilities being thought through, sentences being formed- until finally she managed a less than eloquent
Colt took on a bemused grin.
"I-I'm a Creator too! How awesome is this?"
"I I'm not really sure what to say, Colt. I mean, I've never met another Creator before! Which Reality did you make?"
His smile waned.
"Well, you see, I haven't actually, made a Reality, as such "
"What do you mean?"
He chuckled to himself.
"I'm the only Creator who hasn't created anything."
Liz's brow furrowed.
"So what? You're like this secret here-to unknown eleventh Creator?"
"Well Yeah. I mean there's you guys, the Ten Creators with your Ten Realities. Then there's me, who could if I wanted to, but have chosen not to."
"Why wouldn't you?" she
Gate - part 4She pulled off her second shoe and heard him get into bed. She hadn't seen any underwear discarded, and didn't want to wonder if he had any. She tried not to look at him as she got into bed, and struggled down to her own underwear beneath the sheets, pushing her discarded clothes out of bed and onto the floor. She huddled down into the blankets almost protectively.
She dared once more to look in his direction. He has propped up on one elbow, smiling at her, the sheets coiling lazily around his waist. She tried her hardest to keep her eyes on his.
"So what are YOU anyway, then?"
"Well you asked me."
"And you said magician."
"Well, maybe you tell me and I'll tell you more."
He was taunting her with a little piece of mystery, dangling possible truth just out of her reach, and his wicked smirk said he knew it.
"I'm human, just," she said, "Just human."
"A human who can turn into a little ball of light?"
" I'm not supposed to say what I am."
"Say the Council."
Gate - part 3He found himself staring at the point where she'd disappeared, his blood surging with adrenaline. There was almost no hesitation as he prepared to jump through after her. He backed up a few paces, and began to run at the portal. There was a rush of golden particles and she materialised running away from the portal, screaming in fright as she registered him running at her. He skidded to a halt and she grabbed his hand on the way past, dragging him after her.
"You're ok!" he marvelled with another brilliant smile that she didn't quite have the time to appreciate.
"Yeah, ineffable, remember?" she grinned, "Just keep running."
Their next Gate was clearly visible against the strange sky, rippling atop a hill like a jewel in a crown.
The two, out of breath, struggled up the hill and stopped to check behind them for strange black monsters. There was nothing but grass for miles, and they shared a nervous laugh of relief.
The boy put his arm around her as they turned back towards the portal, an
Gate - part 2What was even more interesting was the way her stomach knotted when she looked at him, like she shouldn't be looking. He was young-looking, but at the same time he definitely had more than a few years on her: He could have been double her age, for all she knew.
The sight of him made her feel embarrassed, and his smile made her nigh on speechless. Surely that was a bit odd. She knew what it indicated; however not only had she met him mere minutes ago, but she wasn't even sure she was old enough to find him attractive.
Just to make sure, she pictured herself in his arms as she had been but moments ago. She pictured his smile, she pictured him leaning in Sure enough, she felt her heart flutter. She cut off her fantasy there. She felt as though she shouldn't let it continue. It felt disrespectful.
Moreover she wondered, why now? It had to be the older physical form she has manifested in. It was just old enough to experience these kinds of feelings. She made a mental note not to
